The job card is the spine

Everything hangs off it: the vehicle, the customer, the complaint, the diagnosis, the parts, the labour, the approval and the invoice. When the job card is paper, those links exist only in the foreman's head, and they break the day he is on leave.

Captured properly, a job card carries photographs of the vehicle on arrival, the customer approval for additional work, the parts actually issued and the hours actually worked. The invoice is generated from it, so nothing done goes unbilled and nothing billed is unexplained.

Parts, and where the margin goes

Most garages know their parts spend and not their parts margin.

• Parts issued against a specific job, not vaguely deducted from a shelf
• Cost and selling price tracked per part, so margin is visible per job
• Stock levels that reflect what is genuinely on the shelf
• Fast-moving items flagged before they run out mid-repair
• Supplier purchase orders raised from actual demand rather than from memory

What the owner can finally answer

Which technicians are productive. Which job types earn and which quietly lose. How long vehicles actually sit waiting for parts or approval. Which customers return, and which never came back after one visit.

None of that is available from a receipt book, and all of it changes how a workshop is run once it is visible.
